dc.description.abstractIn Japan’s history of migration phases of unrestricted contact with the international community alternated with others of almost hermetic isolation. Today, only two million foreign citizens reside in Japan. The biggest immigrant communities originate from China, Korea, Brazil, Peru and the Philippines. Officially, Japan opens its borders only for temporary immigrants and the highly-skilled. De facto, however, two thirds of the immigrant community fail to meet one or both of these criteria. Consequently, there is a significant discrepancy between political aspiration and actual result.eng
