dc.description.abstract | Electronic warfare (EW) is any military action involving the use of electromagnetic and directed energy to control the electromagnetic spectrum or to attack the enemy. During Cold War, electronic warfare was an important military activity; a typical attack method was jamming (disturbance) of communication frequencies and radar signals. After cold war, the focus shifted to network-centric and cyber warfare and drove attention away from traditional EW. Meanwhile, the development of directed energy (laser and high-powered microwave) weapons has made substantial progress. In particular, the US and Chinese Navy have advanced prototypes of military laser weapons and first reports of real-world attacks exist. In the United States, electronic warfare and cyber warfare are now integrated in the concept of cyber electromagnetic attacks (CEMA). Moreover, satellites and their communication lines are increasingly important, but they are vulnerable for CEMA. The concept of space resilience was developed as a technical backbone of space defense. This working paper provides a brief overview and background on EW and CEMA, followed by an overview on directed energy weapons and security issues with a particular focus on laser weapons and satellites. | eng |
