Zusammenfassung: Attempts for agri-environmental transformation in the EU are challenged by the need to coordinate conservation measures implemented at the farm-level across larger spatial scales. This thesis examines collaborative ‘farmer clusters’ in the UK as an approach to enable environmental outcomes on a landscape-scale. The thesis draws upon known factors of success in collaborative, decentralised resource management to unravel clusters’ performance in delivering environmental and social objectives. Literature reviews were conducted to aggregate relevant success factors which were subsequently contrasted with the farmer cluster concept by conducting a qualitative data analysis of the publicised and grey farmer cluster literature. Furthermore, clusters’ interplay with financial incentives for environmentally friendly farming (i.e., agri-environmental schemes) was investigated. It was found that clusters excel in ensuring meaningful farmer participation, integrating both local and expert knowledge in decision-making, and enhancing farmers’ capacity for self-contained agri-environmental management. Identified shortcomings were translated into 15 policy and management recommendations.
